The Big Colon – “Philly Physician’s Museum”

One highlight at the Philadelphia Museum is a giant colon that looks like a sand worm from Frank Herbert’s Dune — arranged with one end rearing up from the tastefully underlit display. Doctors were applauded for being able to correctly diagnose this whopper of a gross enlargement of the colon NOT being a tumor — without using X-rays. This digestive distention serves as an inspiration to new generations of doctors, and a warning to those of us who sometimes feel “a little backed up”.

Toxic megacolon is defined as a severe episode of colitis with segmental or total dilatation of the colon. It is typically a complication of ulcerative colitis, but it may be a complication of Crohn disease, antibiotic-related pseudomembranous colitis, and other colitides. Pathologically, acute fulminant colitis is associated with neuromuscular degeneration and a rapid and extensive colonic dilatation.

Sadly, constipation and toxic colons go undiagnosed until its too late.  Understanding proper nutrition, hydration and fiber (soluble and unsoluble) is key to living a vibrant life with a healthy colon.
